Character's name: Sakura (true name unknown)
Character's age: Unknown
Character's gender: Male
Series the character is from: Gate 7
Point in canon they're being taken from: Chapter 19
Sakura is a member of the Urashichiken of Hanamachi, along with Tachibana and Hana. The Urashichiken was created by the Toyotomi family (clan?) in order to protect the imperial capital, Kyoto. It’s a group that uses special powers to obtain its ends. As of right now, Hana, Sakura, and Tachibana are the only members of that group in Kyoto (but other groups exist elsewhere). The three of them (and after the first chapter, Chikahito) live in the Kamishichiken Shrine together.
The purpose of Urashichiken, and Hidetsugu’s mission (as current head of the Toyotomi family) is to find the remains of Oba Nobunaga’s body – which has the strongest oni sealed within it. Hidetsugu wants it for his own purposes. Or, more importantly, wants to prevent Iemitsu/etc from getting it. Tachibana is part of the Urashichiken in order to get his twin sister, Sugi, back. Hana is “waiting” for something/someone/whatever we’re not meant to know yet because CLAMP is cryptic. Sakura’s reasons are currently unknown.
So through all these shenanigans regarding reincarnations of warlords and shit like that… and capturing oni and gaining followers and having various
pokemon oni adventures… Sakura is a fucking tree. A cherry tree that grows, along with another tree (Tachibana), on the sides of the southern stairs of the hall for state ceremonies in the Heian Palace, the Kyoto Imperial Palace. (Actually, I have no idea if he is literally that tree or if he just takes his name from it. Meh.)
Sakura and Tachibana’s purpose is to guide Hana through fights with… those things whose name I forget and don’t want to look up again (monsters? I’ll just call them monsters). Sakura creates the barrier, Tachibana analyzes and identifies the monsters they’re fighting. Both of them are capable of making weapons for Hana. The one who makes the weapon depends on the ‘type’ of monster it is – whether it is yin or yang, they must make the opposite. Sakura is yin and Tachibana is yang. (They’re also referred to as a lunar type and solar type, respectively.) Hana can fight without them, but Sakura and Tachibana allow for Hana to fight at her full power. If they have other functions or skills in these fights, they have yet to be revealed.
We don’t know much about Sakura as an individual character. We don’t know his back story, how he came to know Tachibana or Hana, why he joined the Urashichiken, why he has the powers he does, what his true name is, what his oni is like, why and how he lost that oni, why he’s so ridiculously hot, etc etc.
What we do know about him is this:
- He can’t sleep without the warmth of a body (and even then he says, no matter the partner, he only dozes lightly – but as long as there’s skin-to-skin contact, he’ll fall asleep). It’s suggested that, should Sakura get his oni back, he might be able to fall asleep again on his own (although when Tachibana asks this, Sakura’s cryptic-as-fuck response is “although there are things that never come back again.” So okay dude. Thanks for clearing that up).
- He’s lost his oni at some point, for unknown reasons and circumstances.
- He creates barriers and weapons (as stated above), and there is a concern that, if given a weapon the opposite of himself, he will become “like before” – as his “true power” is to become one with his weapon.
- He is apparently awesome at tying obi for maiko and geiko – he can use his ~*~man’s strength~*~ to make it tight without it being constricting. These are also the people he typically sleeps with when he needs to, well, sleep. Or do other things. Or both.
Sakura is chill as fuck. Tachibana is pissy and murderous this morning? Well whatever, let’s make tea. You want to keep the giant ass tiger in our house, Hana? Sure, why the fuck not! Go for it! You’re fangirling a pretty boy, Chika-chan? Did you hit on him? You should have.
In seriousness, Sakura serves as the smiley, teasing counterpart to Tachibana’s eternal angst and grumpiness. He’s usually always smiling and, more often than not, teasing someone in some way or another. Usually Chikahito or Tachibana. This smiling nature isn’t to suggest that he is in any ways care-free, as there are flashes of moments to reveal the deep seriousness and caring underneath the what could appear a trollish nature. He has depth and layers – he appears friendly and cheerful and care-free, but at this moment in time it’s hard to say just how genuine those feelings are (although it’s safe to say that he has genuine feelings of caring and compassion for both Hana and Tachibana, and at the very least is amused by Chikahito).
He is the level-headed, rational one in many ways. When Tachibana is freaking out about Iemitsu, he calmly tells him to stop and chastises him for being suspicious of Chikahito – reminding him that Hana would not do something to hurt him. He isn’t above scolding when necessarily, whether in seriousness or in jest. He can assess situations critically without letting emotions get in the way of it, or so it appears. He’s calm under pressure and careful in what he says when necessary. There’s nothing about him that could be called “careless”. Even when he’s being chipper and cheerful, there’s a level of control there. He’s friendly, but there’s certainly a wall there – as would be demanded of the kind of job and world he participates in. That isn’t to say the wall can’t be dropped (as mentioned, he clearly cares for Hana and Tachibana deeply), but it isn’t something that’s dropped casually.
The only times this supreme chill-ness and collectiveness seems to drop is
a) when he’s taken by surprise (rarely),
b) discussing SERIOUS CANON THINGS THAT ARE CRYPTIC AS FUCK,
and c) when fighting. Even then, in the beginning of the fight with Sanada Yukimura, he has that standard control – Yukimura calls him out for saying he’s troubled, stating that he leaves no openings and therefore doesn’t seem all that troubled at all. Sakura’s response is to say he’s so troubled because he might just forget to hold back. During this fight, too, there’s the concern that Sakura will become “like before”, which suggests again some kind of back story that involves losing control or some shit. Once the fight gets underway, he kind of goes off the wall (His eyes do that weird circle thing they do when CLAMP’s trying to portray DEM CRAZY EYES), only snapping back to normal once the fight is concluded and Hana’s there to calm him down – and also the connection with Tachibana’s weapon has dissolved.
Overall, he’s the typical CLAMP trope of the smiling guy who may or may not be hiding something, whether that be angsty or just crypticness. He’s flirty. He’s teasing. He’s smiley. Little seems to faze him, but he can show his surprise. Little can disrupt his calm, but it can be dropped. He’s rational. He’s chill. He’s anything but careless or carefree. The smiles do drop when things get serious. But for the most part, he’s amused and amusing.
